Agrasen Ki Baoli: A History

It is believed that the Baoli was built in the period of the Mahabharat by the legendary king of Agroha, Maharaja Agrasen. The earliest recorded history of the Boali that can be found is in the 14th century when it was rebuilt by the Agrawal community who are considered to be descendants of the Maharaja.

The architectural attributes also suggest that the Baoli was restructured again during the Tughlaq dynasty (1321 -1414) or Lodhi dynasty’s (1451-1526) reign over Delhi. Agrasen ki Baoli initially built as a water reservoir also became a community space for women to come together and relax. The place also witnessed several religious ceremonies and functions.

Agrasen Ki Baoli’s Architecture

Agrasen Ki Baoli consists of an ornate architectural style, stretching 60 meters in length and 15 meters in width. The Baoli is built out of rubble masonry with three visible levels each equipped with elegant arches. Ugrasen Ki Baoli stands out from other reservoirs because of its rectangular shape and single-flight staircase with more than 100 stairs that lead to the water.

The Baoli also has a circular well at the northern end of the stepwell which is dry for the major part of the year except the monsoon season.

A mosque is also situated at the southwest corner of the complex with beautiful pillars which add to the aesthetics of the entire structure.
